The Challenge

Better That's reverse-auction technology worked — but reaching a wider consumer audience called for a distinct, shopper-first brand rather than the parent marketplace. DityBit needed to take the proven "drop auction" engine and wrap it in its own identity, its own storytelling, and a consumer experience designed to make the price-drop mechanic feel exciting and easy to understand.

The challenge was as much experience and product as it was engineering:

  • Explain a new buying model — most shoppers have never seen a "drop auction," so the site has to teach it in seconds and make the falling price feel thrilling, not confusing.
  • A standalone brand on a shared engine — DityBit needed its own look, pages, and policies while reusing Better That's catalogue and auction backend.
  • Set correct expectations — drop-auction purchases are final (no change-of-mind returns), which has to be communicated clearly and fairly.
  • Grow supply and goodwill — attract retailers to sell, and let shoppers support good causes.

The Solution

We delivered DityBit as a bespoke consumer storefront on top of the Better That reverse-auction backend — a purpose-designed UI/UX that showcases live drop auctions, teaches the model with a simple three-step explainer, and layers on DityBit's own brand, cause program, retailer onboarding, and policies. Shoppers watch prices drop and hit "buy now" the moment the price is right.

Feature Highlights

1. Drop-Auction Storefront

The core experience. Products are listed as drop auctions where the price falls over time and shoppers "buy now" at the moment they're happy with the price — an extended price-drop animation makes the mechanic visible and engaging (e.g. buying in at a 30–40% discount range). Built on Better That's real-time reverse-auction engine.

2. Engaging Home Page

A conversion-focused landing experience: a bold hero ("Bid, Drop, Win"), a "How It Works" three-step explainer (Choose Your Item → Place Your Bid → Watch the Price Drop), a featured/current auctions grid with live prices and countdowns, a "Why Choose DityBit" value section, testimonials, and newsletter signup — all in a clean, responsive, animation-rich design.

3. Upcoming Auctions & Discovery

An "Upcoming Auctions" panel on the home page (with a "See All Auctions" call-to-action) leading to a dedicated listing page that can hold hundreds of auctions. The design anticipates curated merchandising — hand-picking which products or category mix to feature (e.g. a blend of electronics, fashion, footwear, beauty, and sport) — plus reminders/countdowns so shoppers can plan for upcoming drops.

4. Product Information Pages

Rich product pages tuned for the drop-auction context, including clear surfacing of the auction terms — notably that drop-auction purchases are final unless the item is faulty, presented as a precondition of participating.

5. Returns Policy (drop-auction-aware)

A tailored returns policy: no refunds for change of mind (purchases are final by the nature of the drop auction), while fully honouring Australian Consumer Law for faulty or defective goods — with replace/repair/refund handled through the originating retailer.

6. "Nominate a Good Cause" / Join Us

A cause-based engagement program (mirroring Better That's "Give") that lets the community nominate good causes, routed to DityBit's own contact channels — connecting shopping with social impact under the DityBit brand.

7. Retailer Onboarding — "Sell with Us"

A "Sell with Us" path (backed by a dedicated Retailers page and onboarding form) that invites merchants to list their products in DityBit's drop auctions, feeding supply into the shared catalogue.

8. Brand System & Consistent Design Language

A complete DityBit visual identity — logo, colour scheme, typography, iconography, and imagery — defined in design guidelines and applied consistently across a full multi-page site, while staying visually coherent with the underlying Better That aesthetic. Includes a motion-graphics explainer video to introduce the concept.

9. Shared Marketplace Backend

DityBit reuses Better That's proven foundation — the master product catalogue, real-time inventory/pricing, the reverse-auction engine, and payment/checkout via Stripe — so a distinct brand runs on a battle-tested platform rather than a rebuild.

Running on the shared Better That backend meant DityBit could focus investment on brand and consumer experience rather than rebuilding marketplace infrastructure.

Outcomes

  • A standalone consumer brand — DityBit launched with its own identity, storefront, cause program, and policies, distinct from the parent marketplace
  • A new buying model made approachable — the drop-auction mechanic is taught in three steps and made exciting through price-drop animation and live countdowns
  • Fair, compliant expectations — a drop-auction-specific returns policy that's clear about finality while fully respecting Australian Consumer Law
  • Efficient reuse — a fully branded marketplace delivered on top of an existing, proven auction engine and catalogue

What's Next

  • Curated merchandising controls to hand-pick and category-balance featured auctions
  • Deeper shopper engagement (reminders, notifications, and cause-based campaigns) as auction volume grows
